Dimensions: 24 and 21.5 cm high; 31 and 32,2 cm long
Modeler Johann Wilhelm Lanz, Strasbourg 1748 – 1754
No mark, on the inside of the lids and under the terrine’s base "1" respectively "2" in underglaze blue

Exhibited in the Museum Kirschgarten, Basel 1986 (exhibition catalogue Straßburger Fayencen aus Privatbesitz 1986 no. 10)

Description

The terrines are not included in the ‘Tableaux des formes’ (Bastian II pp. 268 - 285), nor in the ‘Catalogue Marchand de 1771’ (Bastian II pp. 286 - 290) – same as the other famous Strasbourg trompe-l’œil terrines from the heyday of the Manufacture. They were rather reserved for the great princely hunting services, such as:

  • the Clemenswerther hunting service of Elector Clemens August for the autumn hunt in 1751,
  • the service in the hunting castle "Favorite" of the Margrave of Baden,
  • the service of Cardinal de Rohan, Strasbourg.

From the ‘Protocollum Inventarisationis’ of February 1761 (anniversary catalogue Clemenswerth 1987 p. 475) we know that ‘vier Schneppen (woodcocks)’ terrines belonged to the large hunting service of Elector Clemens August, which comprised about 600 pieces.

There are only a few comparative terrines:
2 pairs:

  • Elfriede Langeloh, 1 pair from the Clemens August Service, which we sold to New York after World War II;
  • 1 pair of Coll. Ludwig (Cat. 2010 No. 214)
    = 1 tureen each from the George Bernheim Collection and from the art trade

5 single terrines:

  • 1 pc. Musée des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, from the Cardinal Rohan Service (Cat. 1975 No. 144) = Bastian I. Fig 33, 34 and p. 289 = Le Fayence et Porcelain des Strasbourg (Hans Haug 1922 No. 144 T. XXIe and p. 47);
  • 1 pc. Property from the Estate of Sarah Jane Sanford Pansa (Sotheby’s New York 08.11.1985 No. 184 = Sotheby’s London 29.04.2014 No. 323 GBP 110.000,-- according to the catalogue this is the counterpart to the above mentioned tureen from the Rohan Palace);
  • 1 pc. castle Favorite, from the service of the margrave of Baden;
  • Mathias Baron Ribeyre & Ass. E. Farrando Drouot 01.07.2015 No. 113;
  • 1 pc. Koller 28.03.2019 No. 161 Private Collection Zurich;
  • 2 pc. Elfriede Langeloh
