‘Von Pulverdampf und Schlachtidyll’ – an Exhibition in the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums Mannheim

The Reiss-Engelhorn museums posses the world's largest and most important collection of Frankenthal porcelain. The current special exhibition ‘Von Pulverdampf und Schlachtidyll’ brings together more than 100 precious objects. A special highlight of the exhibition is the coffee and tea service from 1765/66, which was completely preserved with 43 individual parts. It is a brilliant testimony of Palatinate porcelain art, which was artistically painted and signed by C.H Winterstein – one of the best painters of the Frankenthal Porcelain Manufactory. Equestrian battles in front of a historical backdrop, resting soldiers and dramatic battles convey an idealized picture of war actions in the 18th century.

The service, which until 2015 was still owned by Elfriede Langeloh, forms the thematic focus of the exhibition. Along with numerous other pieces, it illustrates the importance of the new medium porcelain in eighteenth-century Europe. The porcelains fit into the context of other works of art that illustrate the historical background of this period. Including curiosities such as an 18th Century porcelain denture.
