Du Paquier pot, Vienna 1725–30

Painted after engravings by Petrus Schenk; 16,5 cm high; scratch mark "Z" or "N"

Provenance: Coll. Dr. Tafel (cat. private print 1983 I no. 18); Valentiner, Wiesbaden; Bednarczyk, Vienna 1967

Published in Langeloh anniversary catalogue 2019 Nr. 146 pp. 776–779 (download PDF)

This model of a DuPaquier pot is very rare. We have found only two comparative pieces: Collection Giovanni Lokar, Trieste and Coll. Samuel Grober, Evanston, Illinois (see Langeloh op.cit. and cat. Sullivan vol. III no. 187 and vol. I p. 350). In this ensemble of three, our pot, 16.5 cm high, is the largest example.

The chinoiserie decoration is typical of Du Paquier's 1720s. The motifs on both sides are based on two engravings from the famous series "Nieuwe geinventeerde Sineesen met groote moeyte geteekent en in ‘t Ligt gegeven, door" by the Amsterdam engraver and publisher Petrus Schenk Jun. After Den Blaauwen, they are published in Amsterdam around 1720 (Keramos 31 / 1966 p. 4). He reproduced them in his fundamental work (op. cit.) on the model engravings of Petrus Schenk (nos. 11 and 16).
