Snuffbox in the form of an egg

Description


Very fine English gold-mounting with the inscription: ‘Rien est trop bon’ ‘Pour ce que l’on aime’ [‘There is nothing to good’ ‘for that what You love’]

Painted with representations according to Bible.
Lower half: Christ with three sleeping disciples, the angel Cherubin, putti in the clouds.
Upper half: Annunciation of Mary, the Ascension, framed by disciples, angels and putti.

In Christian religion the egg is a symbol of birth and resurrection. Snuff boxes in shape of eggs – also referred as ‘sponge boxes’ – contained little sponges, which were soaked with refreshment water. In the 18th century they very popular especially in England.
