Large trompe l’oeil terrine in the form of a cabbage head

Strasbourg, period Paul Hannong ca. 1750
Ø 36,8 cm; 25 cm high; no mark

Description

The Strasbourg cabbage tureen was part of princely hunting services:

  • the large service for the Margravine of Baden (Schloss Favorite near Rastatt),
  • the Clemenswerther hunting service of Elector Clemens August of Cologne and
  • that of Cardinal de Rohan, Strasbourg.

The "Protocollum Inventarisationis" from February 1761 shows, that the service of Castle ‘Clemenswerth’ contained two ‘Kapsköpfe’ (Cabbage heads) at that time (anniversary catalogue of Clemenswerth 1987 p. 475).

With a "span ordre" of Clemens August, E. Wagner has demonstrated that the service was already used for the hunt in autumn in 1751 at Clemenswerth (anniversary catalogue of Clemenswerth 1987 p. 475). According to the introduction of the "PH" mark, at the end of 1754 (Bastian 2002 vol. II p. 248), the early tureens bear no marks.

For "Augustusburg" Palace, Elector Clemens August ordered another faience service containing two 'boutouilles' in the shape of cabbage heads (exhibition catalogue 'Riss im Himmel' vol. VI. p. 430).
