Two vermeil-mounted Meissen Equelles ("Wochenterrinen")

Gold and enamel painting by Johann Gregorius Höroldt, Meissen ca. 1726
Large swords marks with knobs - the so-called "Hoymsche Prügel"; 13.3 cm high (with lid knob); Ø 16.4 cm (without handle), 19.4 cm (with)
Provenance: Mrs. M. Schroder, Coopers Hill, UK

Description

Two round equelles with volute handles and domed lids with gilded round knobs.
On each tureen two cartouches, on the lids three cartouches with golden, light iron-red ornamental work (without purple) and with Böttger lustre. The cartouches depict early chinoiserie harbour scenes, large fortifications, far eastern architectures, European and Chinese ships. The sky is light blue with some yellow and iron red in the early Höroldt style. The painting is first class. The rim of the tureens, the stand rim and the lid rim are vermeil-mounted, also the inner wall of the tureens and lids.

The painting and gold decoration of our equelles date from 1726. It thus marks the beginning of an important developmental step for Höroldt's painting: the adoption of gold painting by Höroldt and his workshop and the resulting replacement of the old gold painter Funcke. Before this turning point, all porcelains to be painted with gold had first to be transferred from Meissen by ship to Funcke's workshop in Dresden, where the gold work was applied. It was then brought back to Meissen, where the enamel painting was done - an elaborate, lengthy and trouble-prone process, which Höroldt was able to complete successfully after many fruitless years of experimentation - shortly before Funcke's death (1727). Our equelles mark this new phase of Höroldt's work.
