Meissen barge with skipper as spice box

Meissen 1750/60

Nails and coloured insects on the planks of the barge, a naturalistically painted lion's head on the bow. The young man sitting at the helm is wearing yellow trousers and a delicate purple jacket with coloured "Indian" flowers.

Model number and modeller unknown. Ehder, August 1743: "1 klein Figürgen in Gestalt eines Schiffknechtes zur Conditorey Sr. Hoch Reichs Gräfl. Excellenz (Brühl) neu bossirt."
Moulded c. 1750/60 (without cross-wall inside). Bisque bottom with blue swords mark. 15.5 cm long; 9.5 cm wide; 11.5 cm high. cf. Rückert 1966, Meissen porcelain, no. 967 T. 231
