A large plate with the rare decor "Blue Lion"

Meissen c. 1734/35; Ø 27.5 cm; underglaze blue swords mark / Dreher’s mark: four triangles arranged in a square (see Rückert 1996 Fig. 7 No. 8)

Provenance: Hoffmeister Collection (Cat. Vol. I Nr. 109 p. 200 f.)

The "Blue Lion" decor is very rare: we are only aware of 7 comparative pieces (see our expertise). In contrast to the original copies of Meissen porcelain based on East Asian models, the Blue Lion is an original Meissen creation. Although elements of Japanese Kakiemon porcelain have been used here - peony and bamboo blossom, lion - they have been arranged in a completely new composition of their own.
