Meissen Helmet Jug, painted in underglaze blue
Meissen 1740-50; height: 20.3 cm; underglaze blue swords mark with "O" between the swords blades (not between the knobs, same mark as Barsewisch in Keramos 121 /1988 no. 19, 20 and Wark II no. 634, plate)
Provenance: Prof. Dr. Günther Sterba
Classic form of the Meissen helmet jug decorated with the most magnificent flowers known from Asian porcelain painting: the symbolic, large peony tree and chrysanthemums. A comparably splendid painting can be found in Barsewisch (Keramos 121 /1988 no. 15) and on the plate in the Wark Collection (Wark II no. 634), with a later, polychrome overpainting (Pietsch dates it to 1740-50). A simpler and smaller helmet jug (17.8 cm) can be found in Rückert (1966 no. 233 T. 65), also with a ‘pommel’ swords mark, dated around 1730.
