Published in Langeloh 2019 no. 112 pp. 596 ff.
The painting is one of Höroldt's earliest works at the beginning of his Meissen era around 1721. From this early Höroldt service only one other saucer is known, which Andreina D'Agliano presented in 2001 in the exhibition "I fragili lussi" (No. 2 Slg. Mario Leproni, Lugano). Together with five other porcelains (including the famous "Canada Bowl") they form a separate complex of Höroldt's pre-Chinoiserie era (Langeloh 2019 pp. 108 f.). The unusual gold frames in ‘Böttger lustre’ and iron red are by George Funcke and do not yet correspond to the norms later set by Höroldt. The paintings of all of this pieces go back to copperplate engravings from Allard's collected works ‘Orbis habitabilis oppidar et vestitus’ from 1695. They do not show Chinese or Oriental figures, but among others Eskimos, Indians or (as on our bowl) ‘Quäker auf einer Tabakplantage in Barbados’ (No. 88, later, 1723/24 included in the Schulz Codex plate 88).
