Large Meissen tankard, painted in underglaze blue by Johann Christoph Horn
Meissen 1721, no mark, 23 cm high (with lid)
Our jug belongs to the group of rare Horn jugs of which only 6 have become known so far (see catalogue of works) - five of them are painted in mixed technique (underglaze blue and enamel colours), one only in overglaze enamel colours. This group is now supplemented for the first time by a jug painted exclusively in underglaze blue. Within these variants, it is still at the beginning of the painting style of Johann Christoph Horn, who came from the blue painting in the Dresden faience factory of his brother-in-law Eggebrecht. It was only under Höroldt, who had hired him away against Eggebrecht's most vehement protest in 1720, that he was able to gain closer experience with the muffle colour technique.
