Meissen jug, painted in light olive green ground and „Indian“ flowers

Meissen ca. 1735
17 cm high, large underglaze blue swords mark; dreher's mark: five-pointed star - the five-pointed star was, as Lutz Miedtank (in Keramos 232/2016 p. 15) was able to determine, the sign of Peter Geithner sen. (Rückert in Keramos 151/1996 fig. 9), the oldest dreher in the Meissen manufactory, who also made large services, e.g. the swan service. He was given the press number "1" in 1739, which underlined his position among the dreher and moulders.

Octagonal jug with striking decoration. The eight fluted fields, alternating with a light olive green ground as well as segments left white. "Indian" flowers, on the front with birds, under the spout a dragonfly and a large colourful bird.

Just as interesting as rare is the elaborate design of the shell as a thumb rest, heightened with purple and gold. This elaborate handle shape is known from the plats de ménage in large, famous dinner services. According to Reinheckel (Prachtvolle Service aus Meissner Porzellan 1989 Fig. 82) and Pietsch (Triumph der blauen Schwerter 2010 No. 300), the form goes back to Johann Christian (V.) Lücke (after silver models) - as can be found in the "Churcöllnische" Service by Clemens August, 1741 (Iwe in Keramos 189-190/2005 Figs. 6, 7 and p. 13), the Chinoiserie service for the Danish court, 1730 (Reinheckel and Pietsch, op. cit.) and the Northumberland Service, 1748/50, by Sir Hanbury Williams. For the latter, watercolour design drawings have survived which reproduce our handle shape fairly accurately (but without the thumb rest).
